Let me come over to your house.
Cozy and real
When I first entered the photography world, the majority of my work happened in my clients' homes or their backyards. I truly cherish those memories with those families.
It seems like in recent years (myself included) we as a society really don't like people coming over. We like to isolate. To hide in the safety of our homes. To not show our messes. And certainly, never to photograph the chaos that is just life as a human in a house. I get it. Guilty as charged.
But something we are all forgetting is that someday we will want to look back and see where and how we lived, or at least our kids and grandchildren will want that. I love looking at photographs of my grandparents' house, and not once have I ever noticed a mess or the chipped paint.
Obviously, there are certain kinds of portraits that work best for in-home sessions. My personal favorite is what I'm showcasing today: a young couple's first home. When we scheduled this session, she said, "it's nothing fancy, sorry." And that made me sad. Because ALL I see in these images is love, warmth, safety, laughter, and companionship. And some super cute kitties!
So, before you try to talk me out of coming to your house with my camera, please remember that your life, your environment, your keepsakes, your home... it all matters. It doesn't have to be perfect and tidy. Let'd embrace the mess and capture the love. More sessions just like this, please.
